The problem with waiting long to post photos and write about a trip is that you always forget. There was little to forget or remember on my trip to D.C. The trip was not bad at all, in fact my job put me up at extremely nice hotels in Old Town Alexandria — The Monaco and The Morrison House — but it was almost entirely a work trip and therefore I spent most, if not all my time in the office. My coworkers were kind enough to show me around a bit, but after a full day’s work, it was hard to motivate myself to go exploring. So on that note, here are a few photos and anecdotes from when I did get out of my fabulous hotels.

How do you relish one last evening?
Sometimes I just sit by the window.
It’s time to say goodbye to an uneventful stay in Old Town, Alexandria. Initially, I was going to stay for a week, but my boss asked me to stay an extra week. He bribed me with continuing stay in a very nice hotel where everyone knows my name. Well, the front-desk guy, Abdullah, knows my name.

New design brings new attitude
“I watch the sun as it comes up, I watch it as it sets. Yes, this is as good as it gets.” On the I-17, returning from a day of skiing and snowboarding in Flagstaff, Arizona. We watched the sun both rise and set that day.
Recently this website has slowed down some. There are several reasons for that, but one of the main reasons was that I hated the way it looked. For months — maybe as long as 7 months— I have been wanting a new design. At first I thought I could do everything from scratch, from design to development. I convinced myself I would get around to doing it, until eventually the site just became a reminder of my procrastination.
Also, while I know some WordPress development, I came to realize I did not possess the skills to fully breakdown the site design and have the WordPress functionality that I wanted. I hope to one day be THAT good, but until then I’ll resort to the amazing fountain of resources available on this thing called Internet. So here’s the result… for now.
San Francisco for a spell

When work gave me the opportunity to take a class out of town, I had a choice between San Jose and San San Francisco. One of my bosses, in a conference call from D.C., said “just look to see which trip would be less expensive” which was a reasonable request. My other boss, sitting across from me here in Phoenix, put the conference phone in mute, shook his head and whispered “just go to San Francisco”.

Rebirth of the Camera
On my last sailing trip, I had my Canon SD750 point-and-shoot camera safely stored below deck, where I thought it would be safe from rolling waves and splashing water. But in a twist of fate, in which the irony is not lost on me, the camera was siting right next to an inappropriately capped bottle of water. This bottle of water, and not a drop from the Pacific Ocean all around us, was the culprit of what I thought was the end of my camera. I remember looking at the drench screen, now flashing completely white, and the equally drenched battery and memory card.
The short burst of disappointment ended when I realized how far, how great and for how long that camera had served me — much longer that I had ever hoped. It went skiing with me, lived on a boat, it traveled to several countries and islands; it attended gatherings at seedy bars and lame restaurants.
